Moonflight: How to Find Cheap Entertainment

Why Do We Have So Much Promotional Stuff?

One of the reasons why my dad likes to go to business conventions is that he comes home with swag. Swag is free stuff that companies give away in the vendor rooms. He has a collection of ball caps, coffee cups, pens, little plastic things that do stuff I don't know, and all sorts of backpacks and computer disks.

He doesn't use this stuff. He just piles it up in his home office and occasionally gives it away. It's cheap stuff that doesn't even look like it is made very well. I guess there is a big business in making promotional stuff for companies to give away.

Maybe one of the coolest things Dad brought home was a t-shirt that was pressed into a postcard. So you can mail a t-shirt to someone without wrapping it but then they can't wear it.

A more useful item might be a a promotional click-pen with a company name on it but I will never do business with the company. Wouldn't it make more sense for companies to give these pens to their employees? At least that way they'll remember where they work.

You can turn almost anything into a promotional freebie and give it away or sell it to tourists, visitors, employees, business partners, and complete strangers on the street. Car air fresheners may be the next big thing you know.

Helping people dress up their cars might be a good idea. Almost everyone has a car and they love to put stuff in their cars. You can get printed keyrings for your home or car and maybe if the right company gives them to you then you'll do business with that company.

Maybe the creepiest promotional stuff I have seen or heard about is merchandise with the Federal Duck Stamp printed on it. I guess duck hunters need to be reminded of what they are shooting, right?

When you sum it all up we're just spending a lot of money on creating junk that no one really wants or uses. But we can give it away at conventions or sell it in tourist shops and people feel like they have got something worth holding onto.
