Moonflight: How to Find Cheap Entertainment

How to Find Cheap Entertainment

Entertainment has grown more expensive over the years. We don't always have the money to go out and do everything we would like to do. But there are a few ways you can save some money and still have a great time with your friends and family. Here are a few suggestions.

Customer Reward Clubs

Some entertainment companies -- especially movie theater chains -- provide customer rewards, usually in the form of cards that are punched or electronically scanned. As you accumulate visits you accumulate points. Eventually you can redeem your punch cards or points for free movies, meals, and more. Check out the reward club options your favorite entertainment business offers. If you share cards among friends then you'll get to the free rewards sooner rather than later (but remember you only get 1 reward regardless of how many people helped you earn it). Check out Regal Cinema's Rewards Club and AMC Stubs.

Discount Ticket Offers

If you have a membership in a warehouse club such as BJ's Wholesale Club, Costco, or Sam's Club you may find they sell discounted admissions to movies, local attractions, and restaurants. You may be able to save as much as 20-50% on some admissions with these special offers. Look for cardboard cutouts that you take to the cashier. Discount ticket offers can often be purchased in bulk so if you and your friends or family pool your resources you can spend a lot less on movies and amusement parks than most of the public.

Eat Happy Hour Meals

Most people associate happy hour with beer and alcohol, but many restaurants and/or bars offer full meals at discounted rates during happy hour. You usually have to sit at the bar (or in the "bar section") and the happy hour menu may offer fewer options. Nonetheless, you can often pay about half what you would normally pay for the same food if you eat outside happy hour or in the main restaurant.

Group Rates

If you can bring together 10-15 of your friends and relatives, many entertainment services offer group discounts. This includes museums, amusement parks, some restaurants, and some family-style businesses such as bowling. With just a little planning you may be able to put together a group outing about a week in advance, where everyone pays a little less for fun and food. The next time you go out, check for signs at the doors and cashier stands that say whether a business offers group plans or discounts.

Regional and National Parks

Many public parks still offer free admission. You can enjoy an outdoor adventure with your friends just for the cost of driving to a nearby recreational park. Some recreational parks now charge admission, but check their calendars to see when they may be offering "free" days -- usually on important holidays and/or anniversaries. You can take a picnic lunch along. Don't forget the sun block and water cooler!

Sports Bar TV Nights

Some sports bars feature large-screen television and premium cable services. They make great venues for an evening out with friends where you dine on appetizers and everyone shares the costs.

Watch Movies Online

If you have an HDMI cable, a high-speed Internet connection, and a large television set you and your friends can watch a lot of free movies and TV shows at Hulu.com. Have a "Hulu Night Party" once a month and get together with a dozen of your friends. Watch old shows that everyone loves. HINT: It's best to write up a short list of shows or movies to pick from in advance.
