Is Gambling Safe?

What is gambling? It's the act of putting something you value at risk in exchange for an opportunity to gain something else of value. Gambling is a way to acquire more wealth based on the outcome of some short turn of events. There are three ways we gamble:

  1. We bet on the outcome of a competitive event
  2. We bet on our ability to compete in some sort of game
  3. We bet on the random outcome of an unpredictable event

Card players who gamble bring some skill to the game but there is still an element of chance that they have to overcome. They are not only facing other players of possibly equal or greater skill, all the players in the game have to accept the cards they are dealt (some exchanges permitted).

Sports fans love to bet on their favorite teams and athletes. You're vicariously sharing in the victories of the winners and gaining a little wealth. But you have no real input into the outcome of the contest (not legally).

People who play dice games, slot machines, roulette, and other games where random chance determines what happens next really have thrown themselves to the fates. At least when you bet on your favorite team you know their strengths and skills give them a shot at winning.

Gambling is an important form of entertainment across the world. Millions of people gamble every day. Sadly, some of those people lose their homes, their jobs, their families and everything they value because they gamble too much. Gambling addiction is a real and debilitating disease. But experts agree that most people are not addicted to gambling. And gambling addicts are at a high risk for being addicted to other things, like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.

When you want to gamble you need to be safe. Safe is hard to define. Of course, you don't want to gamble in the wrong neighborhood with a bunch of street thugs who will just as soon rob you as win your money. But there are other ways to protect yourself.

For example, you want to make sure you pay all your bills before you go gambling. That way you don't risk losing money you have already committed to spending on important services, like your mortgage and car payment.

But you also want to budget your money and your time. If you want to go gambling every week then you should make sure you set aside enough money to maintain that lifestyle, and that means when you have lost your weekly budget it's time to go home.

Most people don't understand what "the odds" mean when it comes to gambling. It's not as simple as "doing this six times will get you that". If life were only so simple.

Now, thanks to the miracle of the Internet, millions of people also gamble online. And though we can find plenty of tutorials on how to gamble online, it's not so easy to find advice on how to identify safe gambling sites because most Websites don't think in terms of what is safe.

You have to protect your important financial information when you sign up with gaming Websites. They won't all necessarily take your money and run but there are some real scammers out there. Also, different national laws may govern how these Websites operate. So you want to be careful in selecting which Websites you play with.

Even free online gambling sites may not all be safe. It's easy to install free games on a Website that runs a lot of ads. Advertising code is sometimes used by hackers (absent of knowledge of the advertisers) to download malware to your computer to steal your private information. And while that compromised ad code could be running on any Website, gambling sites have been among those that have faced this problem.

At the end of the day you and you alone are responsible for maintaining your financial welfare and protecting your privacy. It's okay to go out there and have fun, but be sure you understand ALL the risks and take appropriate precautions.
